Looker Studio (Google Data Studio)
Looker Studio, formerly known as Google Data Studio, is a free data visualisation and reporting tool from Google. It connects numerous data sources such as Google Analytics 4, Google Ads, Google Sheets, databases and third-party services and presents their content in interactive dashboards and reports. Marketing and business data can thus be prepared, shared and kept current automatically without programming skills. Looker Studio is particularly widespread in online marketing, because it connects Google's own data sources seamlessly and considerably simplifies creating professional reports.
Also known as: Google Data Studio, Google Looker Studio, Data Studio, Looker Studio dashboards
What is Looker Studio?
Looker Studio is Google's free tool for data visualisation and reporting. It was originally introduced as Google Data Studio and renamed Looker Studio in 2022. With it, data from different sources can be turned into clear, interactive dashboards and reports.
The core idea is to bring scattered data together in one place and present it understandably for different audiences. Instead of copying figures from several tools by hand, Looker Studio connects the sources directly and keeps the reports current automatically. That saves time and reduces errors.
The tool is operated through a graphical drag-and-drop interface. Charts, tables and metric tiles can be arranged and designed without programming. That makes Looker Studio accessible to users without a technical background too.
Which data sources does Looker Studio connect?
Looker Studio’s greatest strength is its many connections. Through so-called connectors it links to Google’s own services such as Google Analytics 4, Google Ads, Search Console, YouTube and Google Sheets. This seamless integration into the Google ecosystem is a key reason for its popularity in marketing.
Numerous connectors from Google and third parties are also available, linking further platforms such as social networks, ad platforms or databases. Your own data sources can be brought in through spreadsheets or database connections, so a broad range of data can be combined.
Several sources can be combined in one report and in part linked. That creates a shared view bringing together, for instance, ad spend from Google Ads with user behaviour from Google Analytics 4. The prerequisite is that the underlying data is collected cleanly and consistently.
What is Looker Studio used for in marketing?
In the Online marketing Looker Studio serves above all for reporting and building dashboards. Agencies and companies use it to present the performance of campaigns, websites and channels clearly and share it with clients or the team. The reports update automatically as soon as the data source supplies new figures.
Typical use cases are Marketing dashboardsthat bring traffic, conversions, ad spend and key marketing KPIs together. Recurring reports, such as monthly performance reports, can be automated too and spare you compiling them by hand. Filters and period comparisons make the reports interactive.
At Elisabit we use Looker Studio deliberately to build meaningful marketing dashboards that bring data from Google Analytics 4, Google Ads and other sources together understandably. Our clients thus always have a current overview of their online marketing performance.
What are Looker Studio's strengths?
Probably the biggest advantage is that Looker Studio is free to use. For small and mid-sized companies in particular that lowers the barrier considerably, since there are no licence costs. At the same time the tool delivers professional-looking, interactive reports.
Seamless connection to Google Analytics 4, Google Ads and other Google services is another strength. Anyone already working in the Google ecosystem benefits from simple, reliable data connections. Added to that is easy collaboration, since reports can be shared like other Google documents.
Usability also speaks for the tool. Its graphical interface produces attractive dashboards without programming knowledge. Templates and an active user community ease the start and speed up creating new reports.
What are the limits of Looker Studio?
For all its strengths, Looker Studio has limits. With very large data volumes or many data sources used at once, reports can take noticeably longer to load. For highly complex analysis and large data models, specialised tools such as Microsoft Power BI or Tableau are often better suited.
In features too, the tool is in part limited compared with paid solutions. Some advanced calculations, modelling or visualisations are only partly possible or need additional connectors. Some third-party connectors also cost money, even though the tool itself is free.
Finally, Looker Studio is only as good as the data it shows. It visualises what the sources deliver but does not check their correctness. A clean foundation of Tracking and Tag management therefore remains indispensable. We recommend checking data quality before building, in a Performance audit to secure.
| Tool | Price | data sources | Strength | Ideal for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Looker Studio | free (some connectors are paid) | GA4, Google Ads, Search Console, Sheets, third-party connectors | seamless Google integration and ease of use | Marketing dashboards and fast reports |
| Microsoft Power BI | free desktop version, Pro from ~ €X per user/month | Microsoft world, databases, many connectors | complex data models and data transformation | BI in the Microsoft world and large data volumes |
| Tableau | from ~ €X per user/month (enterprise) | Databases, cloud services, files, connectors | expressive, exploratory visualisations | deep visual analysis of large data volumes |
How do you use Looker Studio successfully?
Successful Looker Studio reports start not in the tool but with a clear definition of the goal. Before the first chart is built, it should be settled which questions the report answers and which decisions it supports. Only from that does it follow which metrics and data sources are really needed.
Data quality is decisive too. If conversions are recorded wrongly or sources attributed wrongly, even the prettiest dashboard shows misleading figures. A clean Conversion tracking, well-thought-out tag management and correctly maintained UTM parameters are the prerequisite for reliable reports.
At Elisabit we combine what Looker Studio can do with a technically clean data basis from analytics, tracking and online marketing. Where needed we also connect data sources such as Matomo . The result is dashboards that not only look good but form a reliable basis for decisions.
- 1Connect a data source: link GA4, Google Ads or Sheets via a connector.
- 2Choose fields: select the dimensions and metrics relevant to the report.
- 3Choose the visualisation: arrange suitable charts, tables and metric tiles.
- 4Share the report: grant access and keep it up to date automatically.
