UTM parameters

UTM parameters are small additions appended to a link's URL to attribute campaign traffic unambiguously in web analytics. They consist of five parts: utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term and utm_content. On a click on a link marked up this way, an analytics tool such as Google Analytics 4 reads those values and assigns the visit to the matching source and campaign. UTM parameters thus make visible which specific marketing measure triggered a visit.

Also known as: UTM tags, UTM tracking, campaign parameters, URL parameters

What are UTM parameters?

UTM parameters are standardised additions you append to a URL to track marketing campaigns unambiguously. UTM stands for Urchin Tracking modules, and has become a common standard that analytics tools such as Google Analytics 4 detect automatically.

Technically the parameters are appended to the URL with a question mark and joined with ampersands. A link can look like this: your-website.com/offer?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=summer. On a click, the link passes these values to your analytics tool, which classifies the visit accordingly.

The great advantage is clarity. Without UTM parameters, traffic from emails or ads often lands wholesale in the direct or referral channel. With clean tagging, by contrast, you see exactly which campaign, which channel and even which individual creative triggered a visit or a conversion.

Which UTM parameters are there?

There are five UTM parameters, three of them considered basic. utm_source names the source, that is where the traffic comes from: newsletter, google or linkedin for instance. utm_medium describes the channel type, email, cpc or social for example. utm_campaign names the specific campaign, such as summer-sale or product-launch.

Two further parameters are optional and meant for detailed analysis. utm_term is classically used for keywords in paid search ads. utm_content distinguishes individual variants within the same campaign, such as two different buttons or ad texts, and is therefore particularly helpful for A/B tests.

In practice the three required parameters source, medium and campaign are enough for most campaigns. utm_content is added when you want to compare different creatives within the same campaign. That keeps the tagging clear yet meaningful.

How do you build UTM parameters correctly?

A good structure follows one consistent logic. Set clear conventions for every parameter, for instance lowercase only and hyphens instead of spaces. Since analytics tools distinguish upper and lower case, Newsletter and newsletter would otherwise appear as two different sources.

A documented naming convention setting which values are permitted for source, medium and campaign has proven its worth. That avoids the same campaign appearing under several spellings and the data fragmenting. A central overview or a UTM generator supports the whole team in this.

Keep the values both meaningful and compact. utm_campaign should name the campaign clearly without becoming needlessly long. A well-considered structure lets you group and compare campaigns cleanly in your reports, even across long periods.

Which mistakes should you avoid?

One common mistake is inconsistent spelling. If source and medium are sometimes capitalised, sometimes not, or named differently, a campaign splits into several entries and the analysis becomes confusing. A binding convention reliably prevents this.

Tagging internal links with UTM parameters is equally problematic. Putting UTM tags on links within your own website overwrites the original source and distorts the acquisition data. UTM parameters belong solely on external entry points such as newsletters, ads or social posts.

Other typical mistakes are forgetting to tag, which puts traffic in the direct channel, and inconsistent or missing documentation. At Elisabit we help you build a clean UTM scheme so your campaign data stays reliable and comparable.

How do UTM parameters work in Google Analytics 4?

In Google Analytics 4, the values from the UTM parameters feed directly into the acquisition reports. utm_source and utm_medium determine the source/medium value and influence which default channel group a visit is assigned to. utm_campaign appears as its own dimension through which you can filter and compare campaigns.

Targeted analysis thus becomes possible: you see how many sessions, engagements and conversions a particular campaign triggered through a particular channel. With utm_content you can also compare individual creatives against each other and judge your creative performance.

For this data to come together cleanly, correct and consistent tagging of all campaign links is decisive. We set up your UTM scheme so it works seamlessly with your acquisition reports and Marketing dashboards works together.

How does UTM tracking support reporting?

Cleanly set UTM parameters are the basis for meaningful Campaign reporting. They let you compare the success of individual activities across channels, identify the most effective creative and direct budget to the strongest campaigns.

Combined with marketing dashboards, the UTM data condenses into a clear overview of every running campaign. You do not have to look each activity up separately in GA4 but keep the overall success of your work in view in one place.

We connect your UTM-based campaign measurement to clear reports and ensure a consistent data basis. That lets you decide soundly which channels and campaigns really move your marketing forward.

Frequently asked questions

What are UTM parameters?

UTM parameters are standardised additions to a URL with which you can attribute campaign traffic in Web analytics unambiguously. On a click, an analytics tool such as Google Analytics 4 reads the values and assigns the visit to the right source and campaign. That shows you which activity triggered a visit.

Which UTM parameters are there?

There are five parameters: utm_source for the source, utm_medium for the channel type and utm_campaign for the campaign are the basics. Optionally utm_term for keywords and utm_content for distinguishing individual creatives are added, for instance for A/B tests of different ad variants.

How do I build UTM parameters correctly?

Use a uniform spelling, for instance lowercase only and hyphens instead of spaces, since tools distinguish upper and lower case. A documented naming convention for source, medium and campaign prevents the same campaign appearing under several spellings.

Which UTM parameter mistakes should I avoid?

Avoid inconsistent spellings that split campaigns, and avoid tagging internal links, since that overwrites the original source. Forgetting to tag also puts traffic in the direct channel. A clear scheme and documentation prevent these mistakes.

How do UTM parameters work in Google Analytics 4?

In GA4, utm_source and utm_medium determine the source/medium value and the channel assignment, while utm_campaign can be analysed as its own dimension. You thus see sessions, engagement and conversions per campaign and can even compare individual creatives with utm_content.
